It was discovered that the driver had fallen asleep behind the wheel after driving for 24 hours straight. This is a violation of federal regulations for trucking companies, which are required to limit driving hours in order to reduce fatigue-related accidents. The ensuing lawsuit is said to have resulted in a $90 million dollar settlement.
This Glee star’s death shocked the nation, as her body was discovered in the waters of Lake Piru in California, leaving her four-year-old son alone on the boat. Though not filed by the actress, a wrongful death lawsuit has been filed on behalf of her son, naming Ventura County, the United Water Conservation District, and Ventura County Parks and Recreation Management.
The pontoon she rented did not meet US Coast Guard safety standards, according to an investigation. The lake was also not posted with any safety warnings, and the boat “was not equipped with a safely accessible ladder, adequate rope, an anchor, a radio, or any security mechanisms to prevent swimmers from becoming separated from their boats,” according to court documents.
“Disturbingly, a subsequent inspection revealed that the boat was not even equipped with any flotation or lifesaving devices, which is a direct violation of California law.” This case is still active.
Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps was involved in a car accident in 2009, crashing into a woman at an intersection. After hiring a personal injury attorney, it was soon discovered that the woman had run a red light, causing the accident in the first place, based on video footage and eyewitness accounts. The evidence established that Phelps was not liable and had a clean driving record.
The pop star, her family, and a few crew members were in a tour bus at a traffic stop in the snowy Pocono mountains in 1990. A large truck rear-ended them, destroying the tour bus and injuring everyone on board. Estefan’s back was broken, and she had to cancel her tour to undergo spinal surgery, which included the insertion of two steel rods into her back. Her recovery took a year. Her husband was injured in the head, and their son broke his collarbone.
To assist the injured party, a personal injury attorney was hired. The attorneys filed a lawsuit against the truck driver, his employer, the truck’s owner, and four affiliated businesses related to the goods transported on the truck. From the seven defendants, Estefan and her family, as well as the crew members, received a $8.5 million settlement.
According to the lawsuit, producers were asked to give Michaels instructions on where he should stand during his performance. According to the producers, he “missed his mark.” His case was successfully settled out of court after he hired a personal injury attorney, though the settlement amount remains confidential.
